Meet The Natural Bodyguards That Protect Our Crops

Posted On: May 3, 2018

Imagine being a crop and suddenly being attacked by a legion of spider mites! You can’t run or cry for help, but if you’re lucky you just might have some good buddies by your side to help fend off the mighty pests. Many scientists like to call these minuscule critters “bodyguards” and it’s not hard to imagine why.

Just like in human nature, in the plant universe there are good and bad bugs. To help give our berry crops the best chance to thrive, it is crucial to employ an effective natural pest control system in our fields. How do we do it? By learning which bugs are our friends and which are our foes, and by identifying who eats whom.

The bad bugs are all those predatory creatures who like to nibble on our crops and the good ones are those who fight them. “Inside our labs we create special homes to host those beneficial insects in order to keep them going all year round”, says biological control supervisor Carolina Aguilar. “Working with living organisms is an extraordinary challenge. Our job is to be attentive during every step of their biological process, from birth to adaptation.”

Natural enemies are essential in order to promote sustainable agriculture. Inside our labs, team workers are actively researching about biological control and coming up with wise strategies to support a balanced ecosystem. “Without a doubt biological control is the most effective way for anyone doing sustainable agriculture”; says biologist Lizzet Graterol. “Using pesticides is definitely not the answer for fighting pests. Nature makes sure to bring us all the biological control agents, including predators, pathogens and parasitoids in order to help our crops grow sustainably.”

In many ways our lives revolve around the food we eat. When we think about the crops that give life to our berries we think about naturally grown food that’s good for nature, our planet and every human being. So while you enjoy the plump berries you so much love, you can be sure they’re grown with safety, love and care.
